Why Wayfinding?

Coming Together to Help St. Louis Visitors

Following extensive road infrastructure improvements including the introduction of the new I-64, a group of community leaders came together to design a comprehensive regional wayfinding system to help visitors get the most out of their St. Louis experience.

The project team consisted of representatives from the Missouri Department of Transportation, St. Louis City, St. Louis County, the St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission, Forest Park Forever, Grand Center, Laclede’s Landing and Pinnacle Entertainment.

With the assistance of a consultant with experience implementing similar programs across the United States, the group studied traffic patterns and available road infrastructure with an eye toward creating visitor-friendly routes. The result was the design of a grid-like structure using interstates and “attraction corridors” to move motorists from the interstates into the diverse neighborhoods and attractions of our community.

Attractions and neighborhood associations throughout St. Louis City and County were invited to participate in the program. Their input and financial support provided the necessary resources to install some 250 wayfinding signs, 15 pedestrian kiosks and to introduce this web site – all in an effort to make it easy to get around STL.
